The Humble Beginnings
Our story begins in the remote, southern highlands about 887 kilometers from Dar es Salaam. On the cold, foggy, and rainy morning of 15th April 2020, 12 online media owners in the Songwe region met at Hekima Motel Songwe. This was the first unofficial meeting of the Online media Network.
The next morning, another group of Online Media owners based in Mbeya met for coffee and tea in Mbeya Hotel. In attendance were eight online media owners discussing the industry challenges and how to solve them. Other owners based in Mwanza met on 4th May 2021 at the Cask Hotel in the following weeks. On 6th May 2021, the Arusha-based owners met at the Garden Rose Hotel. Despite the gloomy atmosphere following the passing of the hotel owner, the group met and discussed their challenges and the best way to solve them.
Apart from being different backgrounds and geographically hundreds of kilometers apart – all groups had similar challenges. All agreed and decided to form the Online Media Network committed to supporting each other and helping each other grow. This association is the product of those meetings. The network by members, for members.
A collective voice to champion laws, regulations, policies, and another enabling environment for Alternative media.
An association where the government can obtain a representation of all alternative media practitioners and engage them in issues that affect them
An association with a mandate to define standards for bloggers and influencers and provide training and tools for success. Association will create a self-regulation mechanism for industry professionals.
