Journalism is not free speech or freedom of expression. Journalism is constrained expression, and it works in a framework of values and ethics, in the framework of professional standards given in the Press Code/Code of Ethics for journalists. Today, in most online media, we have many ethical and editorial challenges such as breaches of professional standards, one-sided stories, and a chase for numbers of visitors. Also, there is a lot of political propaganda & Fake information, Hate Speech, and other issues coming from owners’ pressure.
In Tanzania, several statutory measures govern online media. As of 2020, the violation of a country’s regulation can result in a warning, fines, or periodic shut down by TCRA. If the offenses persist, it is even possible to include law enforcement with possible jail time. Several countries from Media Council act as a Self-Regulatory for the industry to combat these harsh punishments.
Our organization works to become the first of its kind online media council to self-regulate on promoting professional standards of online publications. Our network’s primary tool to self-regulate is through taking up and dealing with complaints from the public and government through arbitration and adjudication processes.
